the city is at war
the city is at war
“Welcome to Pandemonium! You’re currently in Bedlam Hospital: you were found unconscious on the streets of our wonderful city. Don’t panic! We find a lot of people in a similar state, with no recollection of whom they are or where they’re from. We’re quite happy to accommodate you in our city, however: there are a block of apartments that we use to house new arrivals until they’re financially stable to support themselves. The people of Pandemonium are perfectly friendly, and we’ve enough attractions to keep you entertained throughout your stay. If you’re ready to leave the hospital, we’ll take you to your room. I hope you enjoy your stay in Pandemonium!”
In the city of Pandemonium, there is more than meets the eye. To the outsider, it appears to be a blissful city, protected by the coast to the east and the mountain range to the west. To the north and the south are the roads in – and, apparently, out – of the town. In its content, there are more than enough places for old residents and new arrivals to work, hang out, shop, live, and go about their everyday life. The natural citizens of the city are as normal as the people in cities across the world: they are a variety of personalities, clashing and churning together, and their only difference is that they are perfectly used to strange and unusual people arriving via being found unconscious on their streets and taken to hospital.
These people – outsiders; intruders – have no recollection of their lives prior to waking. Once the nurse has released them from the hospital and given them the address of their new quarters, they begin to remember – at least, who they are, and memories of their past before arriving, but not what they were doing immediately prior to waking. Gradually, they find themselves assimilating to their new life in the city. Eventually, they become aware that part of the nightly ruckus is not merely teenagers and young adults having fun: instead, monsters and demons of varying shapes and sizes are plaguing the city at night, particularly targeting these outsiders.
The attacks are frequent, but not every night, and the monsters disappear at the first sign of sunlight. If killed, they simply disappear into the shadows. If one of the outsiders is killed, they awake in Bedlam Hospital once more, although with the memories of their time in the city still attached. Unfortunately, from this constant rebirth and the madness of the city is no escape: no matter how hard they try, outsiders black out once they have reached a certain distance from the city, and awake to find themselves in the hospital once more. Pandemonium is now their home.
Welcome to Pandemonium. Welcome to Hell.
